The Island of Nias has long been known and visited by anthropologists and surfers from around the world. Located remotely off the west coast of North Sumatra , the island of Nias in the province of North Sumatra, has maintained its unique living megalithic culture, where villagers in Bawomataluo until today still live in huge and sturdy traditional homes built without any nails, where houses face each other across a paved plaza. The highlight of a visit to the village is the Stone-jumping ritual, where Nias warriors jump barefoot over a 3-meters pile of boulders.
In the past years Nias has also become the haunt of surfers, since the island's Lagundri beach is touted as having one of the top ten best surf in the world.
